BAGHDAD (Sputnik) – A source in the Iraqi Defense Ministry also said that the planes captured the coordinates and the number of Turkish troops, tanks, and weapons.
“Yesterday, military aircraft carried out reconnaissance flights over the military base where Turkish troops are located, taking note of the coordinates of their troops’ positions and their number, as well as the number of tanks and weapons,” the military source said.
On Friday, Turkey deployed up to 150 military personnel to northern Iraq's Nineveh province, without Baghdad's approval, allegedly to provide training to Kurdish Peshmerga fighters.
Turkey's decision to deploy troops to Iraq comes just weeks after it shot down a Russian Su-24 jet that was conducting bombing operations near the Syrian-Turkish border.
Earlier, an Iraqi government source told Sputnik that Baghdad might turn to economic measures against Turkey if Ankara continues to refuse to withdraw its troops.
