WASHINGTON (Sputnik) Thousands of people in the United Kingdom have signed a petition calling on Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Aberdeen, Scotland to strip US presidential hopeful Donald Trump of his honorary degree.

"We feel that Donald Trump's unrepentant, persistent verbal attacks on various groups of people based on nationality, religion, race and physical abilities are a huge detriment to RGU," the text of the petition said.

The petition went on to say that hate speech must not be permitted in academia, in politics or on the world stage.

"We are confident RGU will agree with the petitioners, and act swiftly," the petition concluded.

In 2010, Trump was awarded the honorary degree "in recognition of his business acumen, entrepreneurial vision and the long-term future his company is planning in the north-east of Scotland," according to RGU’s website.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the petition has gathered more than 9,000 signatures.

Trump has made numerous controversial statements about Mexican and Muslim immigrants to the United States during his presidential campaign. In November, Trump asserted on two occasions that Muslims were celebrating the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States and proposed a mandatory database for Muslims intending to come to the country.
