US Approves Potential $301Mln Sale of Air Defense Missiles to Australia

The US Department of State has approved a possible $301 million sale of STANDARD air defense missiles and equipment to Australia, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a press release on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Agency explained the approved sale will include 80 missiles and 15 guidance sections, as well as technical and logistics support services.

"The SM-2 Block IIIB missiles proposed in this purchase will be used for anti-air warfare test firings during Combat Systems Ship Qualification Trials for the Royal Australian Navy’s three new Air Warfare Destroyers (AWD) currently under construction," the release stated.

Raytheon will be one of the prime contractors for the sale.
