Ukraine could pump a total of two billion cubic meters of natural gas into its underground gas storage facilities (UGSF) by winter, if Kiev purchases additional gas volumes in September or in October, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said Saturday. This is important for securing Russian gas transit to Europe.

VLADIVOSTOK (Russia), (Sputnik) — On Friday, Novak said that Ukraine should purchase at least 2-3 billion cubic meters of natural gas and pump it into its underground gas storage facilities to minimize risks for Russian gas transit via its territory.

"If they buy additional gas in September or October, then they could be in time if they have sufficient financial resources," Novak told reporters, answering a question about Kiev's possibility to pump 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas before winter.
